A Brief Look at Medicine in Federico II University

Founded in 1224 it is the oldest public non-religious university in the world, and is now organized in 13 faculties. It is one of the oldest academic institutions in continuous operation. Federico II is the third University in Italy by number of students enrolled, despite its huge dimensions it still represents one of the best Universities in Italy being an excellence in particular for research; in 2015 it was ranked among the first 100 universities in the world by citations per paper.

The typical academic year follows this structure:

You do exams in three different periods. The first period, spanning from January to March is the Winter exam period.

The second exam period aka Summer exam period is in the months of June and July

The last exam period, in the months of September and October is the ‘Extraordinary’ exam

The professors up until now, are fluent in English and have a vast experience in teaching in English

Q:What about exams? What are they like?

A typical exam consists of a first phase or written phase of multiple choice questions in order to do the second phase of the exam – the oral one – you need to answer 18/30 questions. A typical exam can be only written, only oral, or written with no obligation to do oral exams. Exams can be taken as many times until the student eventually passes, you don’t fail the year if you don’t pass an exam.

Q: What are the tuition fees and living costs?

Living costs are extremely low in the south of Italy (including Naples). You can rent a room for 250-350 euros. The tuition fees vary from 150 to 2500 euros per year depending on your income.

Q: Are there any scholarships?

The university offers scholarships to students (borse di studio). These can be obtained based on income and educational credits obtained (the number of educational credits depend on how many exams you have taken because each exam comes with a credit and a personal score). There are also scholarships for housing and meals at the University’s restaurants.

Q: I heard some universities offer free italian language courses. Is it the same in Federico II?

Yes, There is a free Italian course.

Q:Do we study in the morning or afternoon? How are the classes organized?

The studying hours are 13:00-17:00.
