Several days before IMAT 2025, MUR modified the IMAT venues in Dublin, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Warsaw. The table below with addresses has been updated, but please always refer to official sources for final confirmation.
The Ministry of University and Research in Italy (MUR) once again quite late, has FINALLY published all specifications regarding the 2025 IMAT exam for the admission into medicine in Italy in English. All of the original decrees in Italian can be found on their official website.
In this article, we have translated and summarized all of the published findings, which include the test registration dates, test date, results timeline, test locations, test syllabus and grading system, and tie-breakers in the ranking.
Summary of IMAT 2025 Important Points:
- IMAT registration will occur starting 26 August 2025 until 09 September 2025 15:00 (GMT + 2) on Universitaly.
- 2025 IMAT syllabus is identical to that of 2024
- The same countries as last year will have IMAT test centers. Cities not yet specified.
- Changes to the number of seats per university, detailed at the bottom and also in our 2025 IMAT seats article!
When is the 2025 IMAT Exam and Registration?
The 2025 IMAT will be held on September 17, 2025 at all Italian universities as well as at the foreign locations indicated in the table below. As of writing this article (August 8th 2025, when the decree was published) we only know that there will be centres in all Italian universities, and the countries that will have test centres; there is no information about which cities as of yet. The exam for Italian venues shall begin at 11am (GMT+2), with adjustment for the time zones of the foreign countries where the admission test is held.
Registrations for the test will be from August 26 2025 until September 09 2025 3:00 p.m. (GMT+2) , which is a hard deadline with no exceptions. Registering for the admission test will be exclusively through the procedure on the Universitaly portal.
What is the 2025 IMAT Registration Process?
When registering for the IMAT exam on Universitaly candidates are required to provide, in order of preference, the list of universities that provide medicine in English they wish to apply to, as well as any possession of a language certification (if you have one, it is not a necessity, only some medical schools in Italy require it). The accepted language certifications have been added to a table at the end of this article. For Non-EU students only the first choice is important and considered. We suggest reading the articles on IMAT scrolling to understand more about what this means.
If the candidate intends to take the test in Italy, their first-choice university automatically constitutes the location at which the test is to be taken. No exceptions are permitted as to the venue of conduct of the test. In the event that candidates intend to take the test abroad, they must also indicate a test centre.
The finalisation of the registration occurs after payment of the fee for participation in the test, according to the procedures indicated on the Universitaly portal. Payment of the exam fee is to be made in the manner published on Universitaly when registration opens.
This procedure is mandatory for the purposes of holding the test, under penalty of exclusion from it.
IMAT Test Centres for 2025
The list of all test centres published by the MUR can be found in PDF format at this link. The original publication was lacking the cities, however all city information outside of Italy can now be found on the Recrytera IMAT website.
Please note that the cities and times are quite different from the previous year. Please check the official website to ensure no details are changed from the official course. While the website gives check in times they also specify to show up AT LEAST 2 or 3 HOURS BEFORE HAND TO EVERY CENTER.

Exam Specifications for IMAT 2025
The admission test includes 60 questions, each with five answer options. Candidates have 100 minutes to complete the test, during which they must choose one correct answer for each question, avoiding incorrect or unlikely conclusions. The breakdown of the exam subjects and number of questions are:
- Four (4) questions of reading skills and general knowledge questions
- Five (5) logical reasoning questions and problems
- Twenty-three (23) biology questions
- Fifteen (15) chemistry questions
- Thirteen (13) physics and mathematics questions
A maximum of ninety (90) points shall be awarded for the evaluation of the test, taking into account the following criteria:
- 1.5 points for each correct answer
- Minus 0.4 (- 0.4) points for each wrong answer
- 0 points for each omitted answer

When are the 2025 IMAT results?
On September 25, 2025, the anonymous ranking will be published. The scores will be on Universitaly, in a section only accessible to candidates, following privacy rules. These scores will remain available until all procedures are finished. The anonymous ranking is essentially a massive list of every single candidates score, but with no way of identifying the owner of each score.
On October 06, 2025, candidates can check their test paper, score, answer sheet and personal candidate data sheet on their reserved page on the Universitaly portal.
On October 13, 2025 the national ranking with all names will be published in the student area of the Universitaly portal. Students will be “assigned” or “booked” based on their order of preferences, and where they have placed in the ranking starting the process of “scrolling“.
If there is a tie in the IMAT scores, the ranking order will be determined by the following in order of importance:
- The scores in the following areas, in this order: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, logical reasoning, problem-solving, reading skills, and knowledge gained in studies.
- Language Certification
- Disability Certification
- Age (younger candidate higher)
What Language Certifications are Accepted for the 2025 IMAT?
They have used the exact same table for accepted language certificates as in the 2024 specification. An interesting note at the bottom of the page translates as:
Applicants who have attended a school with instruction taught in English for at least one academic year are automatically recognized as having a language certification.
How many seats are available in each Italian university for 2025?
The main summary of changes from the 2024 available seats for medicine and dentistry in Italy in English are as follows for public universities:
- Catania has 0 EU seats and 60 non-EU seats
- Bologna medicine: EU seats 97 → 130
- Federico II medicine: EU seats 15 → 25, non-EU 25 → 45
- Tor Vergata medicine: EU seats 40 → 60, non-EU 15 → 20
- Inclusion of veterinary seats at Bologna
- Siena dentistry: 23 → 33, non-EU decrease 12 → 2

I recommend that you read this article on scrolling in the IMAT for non-EU. In theory it’s possible, but quite difficult.

Hi, Cagliari doesn’t require a pre-registration, and the pre-enrollment should still be open. It’s not official information but a current 1st year told us that. Most universities should have their medicine in english pre-enrollment open for at least a few more weeks since the MUR bando was so late. Usually on uni websites the deadlines are for other courses unless it specifies medicine in english.

Hello like do you know anyone or heard of something like a person had to leave their medicine and surgery program due to financial reasons …like 6 years is a long course
People drop out all the time for a variety of reasons. Financially, I’m sure it has happened, but I don’t personally know anyone. You can always pause your studies for a few years and then return to finish up later.

UniSiena hasn’t posted the call to applications as of yet, so I have no idea what documents they want us to submit for pre-enrollment on Universitaly. I was just wondering if they are often this late with their calls to applications since all the visa stuff has to be sorted out still, thanks! 🙂
Most universities don’t release their call to applicants until MUR releases their bandi. Now that they have, the unis should be releasing them!

Hello, last year I applied as a non-EU student, and this year I’m living in Italy with a valid residence permit, and I want to apply as an EU equivalent student. How should I clearly show my status in order to apply as an EU equivalent?
You need to check with all of your top choice universities that you fulfill their criteria for being considered EU as they all have different requirements. They’ll also have instructions on how to do that. Usually though you have to upload your permesso or the receipt on universitaly.

Hey Inka, you apply the exact same way you would for any other course. Pre-enroll through universitaly, and when registering for the exam put it as your first choice!
I am an EU student, and I spent hours on it. It’s confusing and it keeps referring me to the same page with no information.
As an EU student all you have to do it wait for the IMAT registration to open, and when paying for the exam select the university and dentistry programme as your top choices, that’s it! Registration opens on the 26th of August.

If you memorise the code on the sticker AT THE END of the exam you can, but otherwise yes on the 6th of October.
english certificate is compulsory?
It’s not compulsory to do the IMAT, some universities might require one. It can also be helpful in the very unlikely situation that every single one of your section scores match up with someone else, so it’s used as a tie breaker.
