In late May 2025, the official website of the Degree Course in Medicine & Surgery for the University of Catania announced 60 total seats for its IMAT students in 2025. Please see a screenshot of the site below.

In 2024, the University of Catania (UniCT) had 30 available seats for non-EU students and 30 seats for EU students for the medicine in English course.
Some groups and individuals have opined that this indicates 60 non-EU seats and 0 EU seats. It is possible that the wording of the last sentence intends to mean: “Later, UniCT will allocate a specific fraction of the 60 total spots to non-EU students.” However, the wording of the website does not make its exact meaning clear, and unfortunately, an Italian version of this site does not exist. The AcadIMAT team is reaching out to UniCT for comment.
It is likely that UniCT is still determining the number of seats for EU and non-EU students. As to the reason why, it may be that Catania and other Italian universites expect a large influx of Italian applicants due to the recent major reforms to the medicine, dentistry, and veterinary courses in the Italian language. (You can read more about the reforms in our article concerning the 2025 IMAT).
The Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MUR) has yet to release the annual decreti ministeriali for the 2025 IMAT, which include specific information about the number of non-EU and EU seats per university, IMAT syllabus, test center locations, etc. The AcadIMAT team will release updates as soon as information becomes available. In the meantime, students can read our articles about the number of seats for the 2024 IMAT and the 2024 IMAT syllabus.
